Musical scholars generally agree that Handel’s Messiah is the greatest musical work ever created, and perhaps for that reason, it has found general favor among audiences, who will seek out Messiah performances, year after year. Multiple exposures to Messiah performances will then, inevitably, cause audiences to discriminate between merely good performances and particularly inspired performances. There seems to be a Messiah cult, if you will.
The founder of Onda Records is a member of that cult, and had attended many Messiah performances in New York and Europe, without ever giving a thought to producing a CD. One Cleveland performance by Apollo’s Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, changed all that.
