You should use this tool to ensure that your Wave Output balance is properly set (not muted or set to the 0 level).
If you cannot see a column for Wave Output Balance as shown above, then hit the Options-Properties tab to bring-up the window shown below. Select Playback mode and make sure an X marks the Wave Output selection for show.
Now you can go back to the Sound Recorder to try a WAV file.
